Wins for Noijens, Steenbergen and De Vreede at Lakeside
Wim Blokpoel - This weekend the 2022 WDF World Championship finally started at the historical venue, The Lakeside!!
4 Dutch women, 3 Dutch men and 1 Dutch boy in the competition. It started with debutant Marjolein Noijens who took on fellow debutant English Amanda Harwood.
In set 1, it was 2-2 in legs as Noijens hold her nerves and held throw in 21 darts to go 1-0 up in sets. In set 2, Noijens immediately broke throw for a 1-0 lead but it wouldn’t be an easy victory, as Harwood broke straight back, and eventually won her own set 3-1 in legs. We went to a deciding third set, and at 1-1 both had a poor leg but it was Noijens who held throw and was one leg away from the last 16. In Harwood’s leg, Noijens hit another 21-darter as it was a 2-1 victory for Dutch debutant Marjolein Noijens as she goes through to the last 16 where she’ll play Maria O’Brien this afternoon.

The next Dutch woman in action was another debutant: Priscilla Steenbergen. She also played a fellow debutant in Canadian Darlene van Sleeuwen. In set 1 it was 2-2 in legs, but it was Steenbergen who managed to win the last leg in 21 darts to go 1-0 up. In set 2 Van Sleeuwen was 2-0 up, but Steenbergen fought back to another 2-2 in legs. However, this time it was Van Sleeuwen who won the last leg as she made it 1-1, and we went to a deciding set. In that deciding set, Steenbergen held throw, then broke throw with an amazing 15-darter and held throw again in 20 darts, as she won the game 2-1 in sets! Steenbergen also through to the last 16, where she faces fellow Dutch lady Anca Zijlstra.

The first Dutch man in action, was Ryan de Vreede who took on Italian debutant Francesco Raschini. In set 1 De Vreede saw himself 1-2 down, but fought back to 2-2 and eventually even won the set 3-2! In set 2 De Vreede took a 1-0 lead but missed doubles cost him, and Raschini won the set 3-1 and finished it with a 14-darter. Again a deciding set, but Raschini couldn’t hold his nerves while De Vreede could as he won the last set 3-0 in legs to win 2-1 and go through to the last 32 where De Vreede will play Dutch American Jules van Dongen.
