Veenstra wins at Lakeside, Noijens loses
Wim Blokpoel - Today 2 more Dutch players came in action, on day 3 of the 2022 WDF World Championship at Lakeside.
Marjolein Noijens won against Amanda Harwood in round 1, and the Dutch debutant now played Maria O’Brien in the last 16. In set 1 both ladies held throw at 1-1, but then Noijens broke the throw with a 17-darter, and held throw again to win the first set 3-1 in legs! In set 2 Noijens took a 1-0 lead again, but this time it was O’Brien who broke the throw, and won the second set 3-1 in legs herself for 1-1. In a third and deciding ser, O’Brien had the darts and 3 holds of throw saw her lead 2-1 in legs. Noijens had to hold throw to stay in the match, but she couldn’t hold her nerves as O’Brien broke throw in 21 darts and won the game 2-1 in sets. Still a great debut for Marjolein Noijens at Lakeside, and hopefully we’ll see her back next time!

In the evening session, Number 9 seed Richard ‘Flyers’ Veenstra started his tournament, in the last 32 against Romanian debutant Lazlo Kadar. The man from Ossenzijl started poor in leg 1, but then hit a 15-darter for 1-1 and after a lot of missed doubles still broke throw 2-1. Veenstra then held throw again to win the first set 3-1 in legs. Former Lakeside semi-finalist Veenstra continued great in his own set, and with 3 poor legs from Kadar, Veenstra easily won his set 3-0 in legs for a 2-0 lead. In set 3 Veenstra hit a 14-darter to level at 1-1 in legs, and then broke throw in 17 darts. He then held throw again, for a very comfortable 3-0 win in sets with Kadar only winning 2 legs in the entire game. Some great scoring, not so great doubling but more than enough for Veenstra to make the last 16 where he plays 15 year old talent Luke Littler.
Richard Veenstra 3-0 Lázlo Kadar (3-1, 3-0, 3-1)
