Van Gerwen loses to Smith in Grand Slam of Darts

21-11-2021
Wim Blokpoel - Yesterday the last quarter-finals of the 2021 Cazoo Grand Slam of Darts were played. Dutch number one Michael van Gerwen played Michael Smith for a spot in the semi’s.

A pretty poor start for Van Gerwen, as at the first break he saw himself 0-5 down! In the next session MVG hit a 148-finish to finally get a leg, and at the next commercial break he only was 4-6 down. Leg 11 started amazing for Mighty Mike as he hit a 164-finish for 5-6! Unfortunately Smith kept playing great, and at break 3 it was 6-9… At 7-12 it seemed over, although MVG hit another amazing finish: 170 for 8-12 at the final break. 8-12 became 9-13 and 10-14, and eventually even 10-15 for Michael Smith. 1 leg away but an 11-darter for MVg kept him alive, and 2 more legs made it even 13-15. Leg 29 was a disastrous leg for Van Gerwen though, and he lost 13-16 to the Bullyboy.

And there’s more bad news, as Jules van Dongen (our monthly guest) lost in a last leg decider to Jacob Taylor in the last 16 or the Continental Cup, but we will see him at Lakeside in january! Also because of covid restrictions the WDF World Open in Assen is canceled, there will still be 2 men and 1 women qualifier for the World Championship in Assen though.
