Van Duijvenbode comes back, Van der Voort goes out

31-12-2020

Wim Blokpoel - Today we had two more Dutch players in the last 16 of the 2021 PDC World Darts Championship. We started the afternoon already aith the first one. Former UK Open finalist Vincent van der Voort played two time major champion Daryl Gurney for a place in the quarter-final. After a few missed doubles it wasn’t a good start, and Gurney came 1-0 up in sets. The set after it however, Vincent got revenge as he broke throw himself and made it 1-1. The third set, then went to Superchin again who came 2-1 up. This got 3-1 up as well, and it looked very difficult for Vincent now. However, there came new hope as Vincent won the next set 3-0 in legs and made it 3-2. The sixth set however, Gurney got 6 matchdarts. He lost all of them! Vincent got one more chance to win the set on 135: 25, treble 20, .... and he narrowly missed the bullseye. Gurney hit his 7th matchdarts and it ended in a 2-4 defeat for the Dutch Destroyer. It was a good world championship for Vincent, but here it comes to an end.

Stats:

Vincent van der Voort (94.81) 2-4 Daryl Gurney (93.65)

Sets: 1-3, 3-2, 1-3, 1-3, 3-0, 2-3

We had another Dutchman playing, it is Auberginius Dirk van Duijvenbode. He played in the opening match of the evening session against three time BDO World Darts Champion ‘Duzza’ Glen Durrant. After Dirk started missing some doubles, Durrant got 1-0 up. In the next set Dirk was scoring the better player, however he missed 3 darts to win the set, Durrant took his changes and got 2-0 up. Dirk still overscored Durrant and won the third set to make it 1-2. However, after more doubles from Durrant it became 1-3. Dirk was averaging more than 10 points higher than Durrant, but found himself 1-3 down and one set away from elimination. However, Dirk showed again he is able to fight back. He won the next set with some brilliant finished and made it 2-3. The set after it, he continued this as this set included Dirk’s second 170-finish in this tournament! It was 3-3, we were going to a deciding set. This deciding leg was as tense as it gets. At 2-2 in legs Dirk had the throw in the deciding leg. Aith Durrant waiting on 48, Dirk took out double 6 and got through to the quarter-finals of the PDC World Darts championship for the first time in his career. A historical day for Dutch darts, and especially for Dirk. He now takes on Gary Anderson at the first of january, while the other Dutch quarter-finalist Michael van Gerwen takes on Dave Chisnall. I wish both of them good luck, and wish everyone a happy and healthy 2021!

Stats:

Dirk van Duijvenbode (96.75) 4-3 Glen Durrant (90.76)

Sets: 1-3, 2-3, 3-1, 1-3, 3-1, 3-1, 3-2
