UK Open Day 3: MVG loses in Semi to phenomenal Humphries

07-03-2021

Wim Blokpoel - Today we saw the final day of the 2021 UK Open Darts. We only has one Dutchman left in the Quarter-finals, world number two and defending champion Michael van Gerwen. Mighty Mike played Krzysztof Ratajski in that one. It was quite a slow start as Ratajski got the chance of going 3-0 up. He didn’t do that though, and MVG made it 5-5, and later 6-6. Then MVG took the lead 7-6, and didn’t gave this lead away anymore. He won 10-7 against the Polish Eagle and got into the semi-finals! It was another brilliant performance from MVG, beating someone who averaged over 104.

Michael van Gerwen - Krzysztof Ratajski 10-7 (102.8 - 104.1)

Into the semi’s MVG faced a surprising name, Cool Hand Luke Humphries. Humphries, the 2019 World Youth Champion and 2019 and 2020 World Championship quarter-finalist was into his first ever PDC TV semi-final. Humphries started incredible, averaging 106 in the first 5 legs. After 4-0 MVG saved himself with a 139 finish but was still 4-1 behind. In session 2 Humphries astonishingly even improved averaging 107 winning that session 3-2 and getting 7-3 behind. Was there a way back for MVG? The answer is NO! Humphries demolished MVG 11-5 averaging over 107. I don’t think MVG will give Humphries important tips in the future...

Michael van Gerwen - Luke Humphries 5-11 (106.3 - 107.4)

I would like to congratulate James Wade with the title, and Dutch Darts will be back for the second Super Series, and a monthly q & a with Pim Huberts.
