Two Challenge Tour Quarter-Finals for Van der Winkel
Wim Blokpoel - Yesterday Winmau PDC Challenge Tour 6 and 7 were played in Germany. Quite some Dutchmen were involved.
Challenge Tour 6
In event 6, Jeremy van der Winkel had a great run. He first beat Alex Long 5-1, and then fellow Dutchman Martijn Dragt 5-2. In the last 64 he played another fellow Dutch,an in Perry Noordermeer, who Van der Winkel beat 5-2 as well. A round later he won 5-3 against Dan Read. Into the last 16, Van der Winkel played Lakeside participant Mike Warburton who he surprisingly whitewashed 5-0!! In the quarter-finals, Van der Winkel lost 2-5 to Peter Jacques.
Maikel Verberk started with a 5-2 win over Petros Christodoulou from Cyprus. In round 2 he then whitewashed Roger Hertig 5-0, and in round 3 Verberk beat Ryan O’Connor 5-2. In the last 32 he edged out Martyn Turner 5-4. In the last 16 Verberk also lost to Jacques, 1-5. Former Lakeside World Champion Jelle Klaasen started with a 5-2 win over Reece Colley and a 5-3 win over Steven Beasley. In round 3 he then edged out Franz Roetzsch 5-4. In the last 32 Klaasen beat another German 5-4, Daniel Klose. In the last 16 it was a 3-5 defeat for Klaasen against Belgian Kenny Neyens.
Chris Landman started with a 5-2 win over Alexander Morrisson. The 2022 PDC World Championship participant, then beat fellow Dutchman Erik Meulenmeesters 5-1. In the last 64 it was another Dutchman he beat, in Rotterdam Open winner Kristiaan de Boer, 5-2. In the last 32 Landman lost 3-5 to Scott Marsh. Jurjen van der Velde started with a 5-2 win over Jack Walker, and then edged out Justin Smith 5-4. In the last 64 Van der Velde beat Scotsman Derek Mackean 5-3, but one round later it was a 3-5 defeat against Canadian Shaun Narain. Viaplay pundit, and multiple World Championships participant Jerry Hendriks, started with a 5-2 win over Sonny Johal and then beat German Joshua Hermann 5-1. In the last 64, Hendriks beat James Beeton 5-1, but in the last 32 he was edged out 4-5 by Portugese Paulo Ferreira.
More Dutchmen who reached the last 64 were Wesley Plaisier, Sven van Dun, Dustin Straver, Davy Proosten, Arjan Konterman, Jeroen Mioch, Jimmy van Schie and Christian Kist.
Challenge Tour 7
In event 7 it was another big run for Jeremy van der Winkel. He first beat three time World Champion John Part 5-3, and then edged out German Steven Noster 5-4. In the last 64 it was a Dutch tie which Van der Winkel won, 5-2 against Dustin Straver. In the last 32 Van der Winkel had a big win: 5-3 over event 6’s finalist Scott Marsh! In the last 16 JVDW beat former World Championship semi-finalist Jamie Lewis 5-3, but in the quarter-finals he lost, again, 2-5 to Karel Sedlácek.
Jelle Klaasen also had a second run in a row. He first beat Dan Read 5-2, and then edged out Stephen Burton 5-4. In the last 32 Klaasen beat James Beeton 5-1, but in thr last 16 he lost to Sedlácek as well, 3-5. Wesley Plaisier started with a 5-2 win over Ryan O’Connor and then had a great 5-3 win over Matthew Edgar. Plaisier then edged out Thomas Lovely 5-4 to make the last 16, but also lost there, 1-5 to Scottish talent Nathan Girvan.
Kristiaan de Boer started event 7 with a 5-1 over Greece’s Georgios Nanos. He then beat German Daniel Skoda 5-1, and Mark Venables with the same scoreline. In the last 32 De Boer was edged out 4-5 by Spain’s Toni Alcinas. Jurjen van der Velde beat Sonny Johal and Justin Smith both with 5-3, to make the last 32 again. He did lose in that round again though, 4-5 to UK Open quarter-finalist Sebastian Bialecki.
