Steenbergen and De Vreede win Dutch battles at Lakeside
Wim Blokpoel - Yesterday we had two all Dutch clashes in the 2022 WDF World Championship at Lakeside: one in the women and one in the men competition.
In the ladies event we saw a last 16 game between number 3 seed Anca Zijlstra and Priscilla Steenbergen, who beat Canadian Darlene van Sleeuwen in round 1. After Zijlstra held throw in leg 1, Steenbergen also won her own leg: in 15 darts!! In leg 3, both ladies struggled at the doubles but it was Steenbergen who broke Zijlstra’s throw, and then held throw herself to win the first set 3-1 in legs. In set 2 Steenbergen had the darts, but Zijlstra broke immediately. However, Priscilla ‘Smurf’ Steenbergen broke straight back, and held throw to be one leg away from the quarter-finals on her debut. 2016 quarter-finalist Zijlstra did manage to hold her own leg, as the second set went into a deciding leg. Both women didn’t seem nervous at all and scored well. Zijlstra missed one dart at double for a 126 finish and 1-1 in sets, as Steenbergen did hit the winning double and won the game 2-0 in sets! Into the quarter-finals on her debut now, where Steenbergen will play Kirsty Hutchinson.

In the men competition we had a last 32 game between Dutch American and fotmer Dutch Darts guest Jules van Dongen, the number 11 seed, and The Hague’s Ryan de Vreede who beat Italian Francesco Raschini in round 1. After a longer break than expected due to technical difficulties in the Lakeside, the men got started. At a 1-0 lead, De Vreede immediateky broke Van Dongen’s throw for 2-0. However, the Dutch Dragon broke straight back and Van Dongen then held throw in 13 darts for 2-2. A deciding leg in set 1, and it was De Vreede who won it in 18 darts to go 1-0 up in sets. After another longer break than expected, as the techincal difficulties were back, set 2 started and Van Dongen was 2-0 up in his own set. However, again the other player came back as De Vreede broke throw in 15 darts and then held throw, as it was 2-2 again. In leg 5 De Vreede managed to break the throw, as he went 2-0 up in sets! The technical difficulties were back again, as we could only follow the rest of the game on dartconnect, and in set 3 Van Dongen immediately broke throw in 15 darts and held throw for a 2-0 lead. 2-0 became 3-1, as Van Dongen got his first set and it was 2-1.
