Semi-final for MVG in night 3 of PL

18-02-2022

Wim Blokpoel - Last night the 2022 PDC Cazoo Premier League continued. Michael van Gerwen took on Joe Cullen.

Cullen was in good form, having won both pro tours last weekend. It was the Dutch number one who went 1-0 up though with a 112-finish. At 2-2 both missed darts at double but again it was Van Gerwen who took the lead, 3-2. MVG then hit an amazing 12-darter for 4-2, and went even 5-2 up! 4 matchdarts missed in leg 8 though as ‘The Rockstar’ made it 5-3. In leg 9 MVG missed 2 more matchdarts but Cullen also missed 7 dsrts at double, as Van Gerwen won 6-3 despite a low 90’s average and a lot of missed doubles.

In the semi-finals MVG took on World number one Gerwyn Price, who averaged over 108 in his win over Michael Smith. Both men started well and levelled at 2-2. In leg 5 Price hit 177, then 180 and then: Treble 20, Treble 20, DOUBLE 12!! A nine-dart finish for the Iceman, his second on tv this year (although it wasn’t a surprise as Co Stompé commentated). In leg 6 Price even went 4-2 up, but then Van Gerwen threw out 116, and hit a 13-darter for 4-4. 2 more holds as it was 5-5 and they went into a deciding leg! However, Price hit an 11-darter and won it 6-5 with an average of 109 while MVG lost with a 106 average himself. Another good performance, but another defeat in the semi-finals for Van Gerwen in the Premier League.
