Semi-final for MVG at Players Championship 3

Wim Blokpoel - Today Players Championship 3 of 2022 has been played.

Michael van Gerwen started with a very easy 6-1 win against Darius Labanauskas. He then averaged an amazing 105,5 in a 6-2 win over Irish William O’Connor. In his board final it was a Dutch clash between MVG and Raymond van Barneveld!!! It was MVG who beat RVB 6-3. In the last 16 Van Gerwen played Niels Zonneveld. This second Dutch tie was won by Van Gerwen with 6-3 as well, as MVG averaged 107,4 and Zonneveld ‘only’ 100,6. In the quarter-finals Mighty Mike beat James Wade 6-4 on the stream. Into the semi-finals and a very good day, but that was the end for Van Gerwen. An average of 102,1 was not enough, as Damon Heta averaged 109 to beat MVG 7-4!! 

Before his defeat, Zonneveld had 3 impressive wins! In round 1 he edged out Andrew Gilding with an average of 96,2. In round 2 he then beat Belgian Mario Vandenbogaerde 6-4, but his most impressive win came in the last 32. Zonneveld beat Dave Chisnall 6-4! He also averaged 98,1 in it. An before his defeat, Van Barneveld beat Jeffrey de Zwaan in a Dutch first round 6-3. RVB then beat Brian Raman very easy 6-1 as well. Kevin Doets made a third last 32 in a row! He averaged 106,4 in an incredible game in round 1 where he beat Ross Montgomery 6-1! In round 2 Doets beat Keegan Brown 6-4, before he lost 4-6 to Steve West.

Ron ‘The Bomb’ Meulenkamp edged out Berry van Peer in round 1 6-5. The man from Almere then had an impressive 6-3 win over 2 time World Champ Adrian Lewis! In round 3 Meulenkamp lost 1-6 to Joe Murnan. Maik Kuivenhoven averaged 97 in a 6-0 whitewash against 3 time Lakeside World Champ Glen Durrant! In the last 64 Kuivenhoven then averaged 96 again as he beat Ryan Searle 6-3. In his board final Kuivenhoven got 5-3 up, but lost 5-6 to Scott Williams. Purmerend’s Vincent van der Voort finally got his first ranking money of the year, as he beat Belgian Mike de Decker 6-2 in round 1. VVDV then came from 0-3 and 4-5 down to beat 2 time World Champ Gary Anderson 6-5! In round 3 Van der Voort lost 2-6 to eventual winner Joe Cullen.

Last Dutch win of the day was a first round win from Urk’s Geert Nentjes as he surprised by beating Mervyn King 6-4 with an average of 96,4! Nentjes then lost 2-6 to Croatian Boris Krcmar. 

Dirk van Duijvenbode had another bad day this year, as he got edged out 5-6 by Jason Lowe in round 1. Martijn Kleermaker also lost 5-6 in the first round, on stream against Andy Boulton. Other Dutch first round defeats came from: Jermaine Wattimena (4-6 against Dave Chisnall), Damian Mol (0-6 against Lewis), Jimmy Hendriks (2-6 against Martin Schindler) and Luc Peters (3-6 against Anderson).
