Recap - NDB Rotterdam Open
Wim Blokpoel - This weekend the second NDB Open ranking event of the year was played: the Rotterdam Open.
In the men A event were some early surprises. Winner of the first Open of fhe year, in Barneveld, Gillian Koehoorn already lost in the last 64 to Sietse Kuipers with 1-4! The last 64 also was the round where Vincent’s son Kevin van der Voort lost, 2-4 to Tom van den Hoogen, as did former Lakeside participant Jeffrey Sparidaans, 3-4 to Gilbert van der Meijden. Another surprise as Dutch talent Jurjen van der Velde lost in the same round 2-4 to Marvin van Velzen, while Wesley Plaisier did beat Alexander Merkx 4-1. A very surprising participant was former UK Open winner Roland Scholten! Scholten did lose in the last 64, 1-4 to Arie van den Eijkel. Eurotour participant Gian van Veen was another surprising early loser, as he lost 3-4 to Davy van der Zande. Willem Mandigers was another man who went out in this round, 1-4 to Max Timmers.
In the last 16 Wesley Plaisier won again, 4-1 over Patrick van den Bogaard. Former Lakeside World Champion Jelle Klaasen surprisingly got edged out 3-4 by Marvin Dijkstra. In the quarter-finals it was a surprising defeat for Wesley Plaisier, as he lost 3-5 to Gilbert van der Meijden. Kristiaan de Boer edged out Marvin Dijkstra 5-4, while Davy van der Zande won against Patrick Peters. Last semi-finalist was Ivo Leeksma who surprisingly whitewashed Moreno Blom!
In the semi’s, Kristiaan de Boer beat Gilbert van der Meijden 5-2, while Ivo Leeksma beat Davy van der Zande 5-1. In the final it was 31 years old Kristiaan de Boer who won the men A Rotterdam Open 2022, as he beat Ivo Leeksma 2-0 in sets!
In the men B event Robbie Vlaardingerbroek, son of the first Dutchman to play at Lakeside Bert Vlaardingerbroek, beat Ruben Verbaas 3-1 in the semi-final, while Jeroen Gorter beat Raoul Meijer by the same scoreline. In the final it was Gorter who picked up the title, beating Vlaardingerbroek 4-2.
In the ladies event there was a massive upset in the last 32, as number one seed Aileen de Graaf lost 2-3 to Anneloes Menger! Menger went on to make the quarter-finals, where she lost 0-4 to Nathalie van Marm. In the same round, Astrid Trouwborst surprisingly lost 1-4 to Noa-Lynn van Leuven. Lerena Rietbergen beat Aletta Wajer 4-1, while Anda Zijlstra also surprisingly lost, 2-4 to Desiree Geel. In the semi-finals, Van Leuven edged out Van Marm 4-3, while Rietbergen beat Geel 4-2. In the final, Lerena Rietbergen was the favourite, but she got whitewashed 0-5 by Noa-Lynn van Leuven who very impressively picked up the title!
In the girls event, it was big favourite Rosanne van der Velde who picked up her second title of the year, beating Chantal Tessin 3-0 in the final. In the aspirants (young boys) event it was Koen Schreuders who beat Joeri Schorfhaar 3-0 in the final. In the boys event, favourite for the title Pim van Bijnen lost in the quarter-finals 2-3 to Kaya van den Brink. In the final, the same Van den Brink played Barneveld Open finalist Bram van Dijk. It was Van Dijk who did win the title this time, as he won it 4-0.
Finally, the paradarts. In the non-wheelchair event Cliff Ruiter whitewashed Pascal van der Hoorn 3-0 in the semi-finals, while favourite Michelovic van Velzen beat Michel van den Hengel 3-1. In the final however, Cliff Ruiter surprisingly beat Van Velzen 3-2 to win the title! In the wheelchair event, former guest Wilco Wassink lost in the quarter-finals to Ynske Snelleman 2-3. Wilco’s fiance Chanine Vriezen did make the semi-finals but lost 0-3 to Anton van Hemert. Snelleman lost the other semi-final 0-3 to Carel Scholten. In the final, Scholten beat Van Hemert 3-1.
The next NDB ranking event will be the Open Stedendriehoek in Zutphen, which is played on the 15th of may. It is the last ranking event, before the Dutch Championship in Barneveld in july.
