22-01-2022

Wim Blokpoel - Yesterday the 2022 PDC Unicorn Challenge Tour started. 24 events, for everyone who doesn’t have a PDC Tourcard. 5 events this weekend, of which two yesterday.

Jeremy van der Winkel showed good form at Q-School. Today he started with a 5-2 win over Daniel Day. In the last 128 he then beat Chris Hogg 5-0, before losing to Robert Rickwood 1-5 in the last 64. Sven van Dun started with a 5-0 win over Phillip Bisset, and then beat Lewis Pride 5-3. He then also lost in the last 64, 3-5 to German Lukas Wenig. A name we haven’t heard much of before is Jimmy van Schie, but he started good today: he beat James Bishop 5-1, and Keenan Thomas 5-3. In the last 64 Van Schie also lost, 1-5 against Karel Sedlácek. After losing his tourcard, Jelle Klaasen made his Challenge Tour debut. He started with 2 comfortable 5-1 victories over Tony Richardson and Joshua Burksfield, but then also lost in the last 64, 2-5 to Owen Maiden.

Some other Dutchmen went on to make round 2. Ryan de Vreede beat Will Harwood 5-2, before losing 4-5 to Paul Mitchell after a 4-2 lead. Berry’s brother Carlo van Peer also played, and he beat Welsh Michael Huntley 5-1, before he lost in the last 128 4-5 to Jim McEwan. Roemer Mooijman won 5-2 against Lee Andrews, but then got edged out by Darren Johnson 4-5. Gillian Koehoorn won 5-3 against Adam Atkinson, but then lost 2-5 to Shaun Carroll. Davy Proosten won 5-1 against Jordan Crabtree, but then lost 3-5 to 16 year old talent Leighton Bennett, who averaged 96,3 against Proosten! Maikel Verberk, Mathieu de Loos, Gian van Veen, Patrick van den Bogaard, Marco Custers, Arjan Konterman, Danny van Trijp, Dustin Straver, Owen Roelofs and Martijn Dragt all lost out first round, while Jeroen Mioch and Erik Meulenmeesters even lost in the prelim round of Challenge Tour 1.

In event 2, the last 64 was again the best result from a Dutchman, but this time only one Dutchman made that round: Patrick van den Bogaard. He beat both Kelvin Hart and Lee Cocks 5-3, before he lost himself 3-5 to Thibault Tricole from France.

6 Dutchmen did manage to make round 2. Maikel Verberk had an easy 5-1 win against Joshua Sinkovits, but then lost 2-5 to Irish Martin Heneghan. Dutch talent Owen Roelofs beat Paul Mitchell 5-3, before losing 2-5 to Scottish Jason Hogg. Gian van Veen beat Alex Clyburn 5-2 in the prelim round, and then former World Cup of Darts finalist Barrie Bates as well with 5-2. In the last 128 Van Veen then lost 4-5 to Paul Hogan. Sven van Dun had a 5-1 win over Phillip Bisset, before he got edged out 4-5 by 5 time PDC major Quarter-Finalist Jamie Caven. Roemer Mooijman beat Matthias Dietrich 5-4, before he lost 4-5 to Darren Johnson in round 2 for the second event in a row! Jelle Klaasen beat Steve Haggerty 5-1, but then lost 2-5 to German Franz Roetzsch.

In round 1, Davy Proosten averaged 102,2! But he still lost his game to Karel Sedlácek who averaged 97,8! Jimmy van Schie, Danny van Trijp, Ryan de Vreede, Martijn Dragt, Marco Custers, Erik Meulenmeesters, Jeroen Mioch, Carlo van Peer, Gillian Koehoorn, Jeremy van der Winkel, Mathieu de Loos and Dustin Straver also lost in round 1, while Arjan Konterman lost in the prelims.
