MVG and VVDV in quarter-finals 2021 PC Finals
Wim Blokpoel - Yesterday the second and third round of the 2021 Ladbrokes Players Championship Finals have been played in Minehead. We had 4 Dutchmen into round 2. Vincent van der Voort took on Scottish Andy Boulton on stage 2. Despite an early lead, he saw himself go 4-5 down. However, VVDV made it 5-5, and comfortably won the last leg to win it 6-5 with a 97 average. On the main stage we had the battle of 2 Dutch darting legends. 3 time world champion Michael van Gerwen took on 5 time world champion Raymond van Barneveld. A very close game after 6 legs: it was 3-3. Then MVG managed to get one bresk of throw and as he had the throw himself, that was enough to win 3 legs on the spin as he beat Van Barneveld 6-3. The Freeze Danny Noppert played Belgian number one Dimitri van den Bergh. The former semi-finalist at this event, Noppert, comfortably beat Van den Bergh 6-2 to make it through to the last 16.
In the last 16 there was again a Dutch tie. Noppert took on Van der Voort. Van der Voort took an early lead and went 5-2 up. Later he also went 7-3 up, and Noppert couldn’t recover from that. Van der Voort won it 10-7 as he went into his first quarter-final at this event in 7 years! Dutch number one Michael van Gerwen played against two time World Champion Gary Anderson. A 4-1 lead despite only averaging 90 for MVG at the first commercial break. Eventually Mighty Mike won it comfortably 10-6 with a 95 average.
This afternoon MVG takes on Peter Wright in his quarter-final while Van der Voort plays ‘The Ferrett Jonny Clayton.
