Michael van Gerwen wins Premier League
Wim Blokpoel - Last night the 2022 PDC Cazoo Premier League came to an end. After 16 weeks, 4 players have made the play-offs. One of them was Dutch number one Michaek van Gerwen.
In his semi-finals game, Van Gerwen took on James Wade. MVG was looking for recenge, after losing to Wade in the quarter-finals of the Nordic Darts Masters 2 days earlier.
‘Mighty Mike’ at 1-1, hit a great 110-finish, followed by an 11-darter for a 3-1 lead. 3-1 became 8-4, as Van Gerwen then made it 9-4 and finished it with a second 11-darter for a 10-4 win!
Into the final of the Premier League, it was debutant Joe Cullen who took on Van Gerwen. It turned out to be an absolute belter of a game! At 3-3, it was Van Gerwen who hit a 12-darter, and the 4-3 lead later became a 6-4 lead at the second commercial break. However, ‘The Rockstar’ fought back and won the next 2 legs to level once more, at 6-6. 6-6 became 7-7, later on it was 9-9, and at 10-10 we went into a deciding leg for the Premier League title! Cullen started it, and had one matchdart on double 16 but missed! Van Gerwen did manage to hit double 14 as he crowned himself the Premier League champion for the sixth time, and won his first major title since november 2020!
Van Gerwen now takes a few weeks rest as he’s recovering from a surgery he has today. But it is certainly a very great feeling he’s going surgery in with, having levelled with Phil Taylor at six premier league titles!
