Jurjen van der Velde wins Development Tour 7
Wim Blokpoel - Yesterday the 2022 PDC Development Tour continued, with a lot of Dutch talents involved in it.
Event 6
In event 6, Urk’s Geert Nentjes started incredible as he averaged 113,4 in a 4-0 win over fellow Dutchman Fransy Kalis. In the last 64 he then averaged 97 in another 4-0 win, over American Joseph Lynaugh, and that performance was followed by an average of 109,3 as Nentjes won 4-0 again, this time against Thomas Turner. In the last 16 it was an all Dutch clash, and ‘The Spear’ Nentjes won it 4-3 against Maikel Verberk. Another Dutch tie in the quarter-finals was won by Nentjes 5-2 over Jurjen van der Velde as he averaged 97,6. In the semi-finals Nentjes averaged 95,9 but it wasn’t enough as he lost 4-5 to Lewis Williams.
Before his defeat, Van der Velde had some great wins. He first beat Billy Warriner 4-0 and then German Joshua Hermann 4-2. In the last 64 he beat Lewis Gurney 4-1, and one round later Katie Sheldon 4-2. In the last 16 it was another Dutch tie, as Van der Velde beat Jitse van der Wal 4-2. Before Verberk’s defeat to Nentjes he also won a lot of games. He first edged out Gibraltar’s Craig Galliano 4-3, and then beat Nathan Care 4-1. In round 3, Verberk edged out former BDO World Youth Champion Joshua Richardson 4-3, and in the last 32 it was another 4-3 win for Verberk, over Killian Heffernan.
Before Van der Wal’s defeat to Van der Velde he also had 4 wins. In round 1 he edged out Gian van Veen 4-3, and in the last 128 Van der Wal edged out tourcard holder John Brown 4-3. He then beat Conall Doughty 4-1, and fellow Dutchman Mark Tabak in the last 32 with 4-2. Angelo Balsamo started with a 4-2 win over Dimitri’s brother Xanti van den Bergh, and then beat Matthew House 4-1. In the last 64, Balsamo beat Harry Gregory 4-2, and one round later he had a surprising 4-3 win over Keelan Kay. In the last 16, Balsamo lost 3-4 to Christopher Holt. Former JDC World Championship finalist Owen Roelofs, beat Liam Fowkes 4-2 and then edged out Wesley Veenstra 4-3 in a Dutch battle. In round 3, Roelofs beat Norwegian Henrik Ettrup 4-0, and in the last 32 he beat fellow Dutchman Bram van Dijk 4-2. In the last 16 Roelofs lost 1-4 to Nathan Girvan.
Before his defeat to Van der Wal, Mark Tabak beat Connor Hopkins 4-3, and then beat 2 fellow Dutchmen in Robert Kef and Youri Brouwer 4-0 and 4-2. Before his defeat to Roelofs, Bram van Dijk beat Robbie Chalmers and Byron Garner both 4-2. Gijsbert van Malsen first beat fellow Dutchman Pim van Bijnen 4-2, and then Jack Boardman 4-0 before he also lost in the last 32 2-4 to Christopher Holt.
Other Dutchman who made the last 64 in this event were: Daan Bastiaansen, Vinay Ramnath and Bradly Roes.
Event 7
In event 7, Jurjen van der Velde first beat Fransy Kalis 4-1 and then James Roach 4-0. In the last 64 he beat fellow Dutchman Robert Kef 4-2, and then Liam Blakely 4-2 as well. In the last 16 JVDV edged out Nathan Girvan 4-3, and in the quarter-finals he beat Irish Dylan Slevin 5-2. In the semi-finals it was a 5-2 win over fellow Dutchman Justin van Tergouw, and in the final Van der Velde played another fellow Dutchman! Urk’s Geert Nentjes started with two 4-0 wins over Derek Barry and Anna Votavova. In the last 64 Nentjes beat Harry Jackson 4-1, and one round later Jake Neale 4-0. In the last 16 it was a 4-1 win over Reece Colley, and in the quarter-finals Nentjes beat Rusty-Jake Rodriguez 5-3. In the semi’s it was a 5-4 win over evejt 6 winner Nathan Rafferty, and in the final it was Van der Velde against Nentjes! It was Van der Velde who won it 5-1, as he picked up his second Development Tour title!
Before his defeat to Van der Velde, Justin van Tergouw had a great return to PDC darts. He first beat Sean Cummings 4-1 and then Ollie Male 4-0. In the last 64 JVT beat Alex Jacques 4-2, and he then beat Killian Heffernan and Jack Vincent both 4-2 as well. In the quarter-finals, Van Tergouw beat fellow Dutchman Maikel Verberk 5-2.
Before his defeat to Van Tergouw, Maikel Verberk edged out David Schlichting, surviving 4 matchdarts in round 1 and then went on to have a run. He then beat Samuel Palmer 4-1, and Irish Ciaran Teehan 4-2. In the last 32 Verberk beat Byron Garner 4-0, and then German Oliver Ufer 4-1.
Owen Roelofs started with a 4-1 win over Lewis Coates, and then beat 2 fellow Dutchmen in Vinay Ramnath (4-2) and Gillian Koehoorn (4-3), before losing in the last 32 2-4 to Lewis Williams. Uitgeest’s Niels Zonneveld beat both Dominik Gruellich and Sam Groot-Roessink 4-0, and then in the last 64 he beat Daniel Perry 4-1, before he lost 3-4 to Girvan in the last 32.
Other Dutchmen who made the last 64 were: Jamai van den Herik, Sam Coenders, Colinn Haverkate, Kevin van der Voort, Daan Bastiaansen and Jitse van der Wal.
