Humphries whitewashes Van Gerwen in semi-Final German Darts Grand Prix
Wim Blokpoel - Today it was the final day of the 2022 PDc German Darts Grand Prix in Munich.
3 Dutchmen were left in the last 16, as Dutch number one Michael van Gerwen played Rob Cross in a mouthwatering tie. Van Gerwen took an easy 3-0 leas, after which both men won 2 legs for 5-2. In leg 8, MVG ended it with a 126-finish for a 6-2 win, averaging 103 and comfortably making the quarter-finals! Dutch number 3 Dirk van Duijvenbode played Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht’s Wesley Plaisier in an all Dutch last 16 game. At 4-4, it was Van Duijvenbode who broke throw with a 12-darter, to take the 5-4 lead but in leg 10 Plaisier fought back once again as he hit a 12-darter himself for 5-5! In the deciding leg, it was a 14-darter for Plaisier as he caused another upset, making the quarter-finals of an European Tour as a non-tourcard holder! Plaisier averaged 99, with Van Duijvenbode averaging over a ton!
In the quarter-finals, Van Gerwen took on Keegan Brown. It was another very comorrtablye game for MVG, who took a 4-0 lead. 4-0 became 5-2, but Mighty Mike edned it with a 13-darter, as he beat Brown 6-2 with an average of 102! Into the semi-finals already, while the other Dutchman Wesley Plaisier took on Cool Hand Luke Humphries. It was Humphries who missed two matchdarts, and Plaisier once again fought himself back in a match, and even made it 5-5. With Humphries on 71, Plaisier got the chance on 98 for the match but he didn’t manage to get a matchdart, and Humphries took out 71 in two darts for the 6-5 win. Another high 90’s average from Plaisier, but this time it wasn’t enoug to go through. Still the best tournament in his darting career so far!
In the semi-finals, Van Gerwen took on Humphries. Van Gerwen saw himself go 0-3 down pretty quicky, as Humphries averaged well over 100 and even improved by winning legs in 11, 12 and 14 darts as Van Gerwen was 0-6 down and 1 leg away from losing! The unpossible thing happened, as Van Gerwen lost 0-7 to Humphries, and not only he lost his first ever game in an Eurotour in Munich, he also suffered his first whitewash in 2022, his first whitewash in a European Tour event for five years, and his fiest ever whitewash in a game with a longer format than best of 11 legs! Still a decent weekend for Van Gerwen, but that game will hurt.
