5 Dutchmen into the last 32 of the World Championship
Wim Blokpoel - The 2021 PDC World Darts Championship is currently being played. 5 players from the Netherlands have made it to the third round.
Last saturday we saw world number one Michael van Gerwen get a 3-1 victory over Scotsman Ryan Murray. Michael will now face ‘Rapid’ Ricky Evans in the third round, just like last year when Michael won that encounter 4-0 in sets.
Sunday we had an all Dutch encounter between Vincent van der Voort and Ron ‘The Bomb’ Meulenkamp. Ron came 2-0 up in sets, but Vincent fought back strong and in the end the former UK Open finalist Van der Voort won 3-2. He will now face former UK Open champion Nathan Aspinall in the third round.
Last tuesday was a good day for Dutch darts. We first saw Danny Noppert winning against Cameron Carolissen. It wasn’t a high standard match, but Danny got over the line 3-1 and will play Dave Chisnall in the last 32 now. Later on tuesday night Dirk van Duijvenbode came with a massive display, taking out 99 in a last leg decider to beat former World Champion Rob Cross 3-2. Dirk, who is only playing in his second World Championship, will now take on Adam Hunt in round 3.
Finally, on wednesday we also saw former World Cup of Darts semi-finalist Jermaine Wattimena play against Nick Kenny from Wales. This ended in a 3-1 victiry for the Machine Gun. Jermaine will now take on World Matchplay champion Dimitri van den Bergh in round 3.
I would like to wish Michael, Vincent, Danny, Dirk and Jermaine a merry christmas, despite not being with their families, and good luck in their next match.
