5-0 win for MVG at Grand Slam of Darts

Wim Blokpoel - Yesterday the 2021 Cazoo Grand Slam of Darts started. Both Dutchmen played in the evening.

Dutch number one Michael van Gerwen started against female tourcard holder Lisa Ashton. It were 4 legs including 3 14-darters for MVG to make it 4-0 and one leg away from the win. In leg 5 he even improved as he hit a 13-darter and Van Gerwen won 5-0 against Ashton, while averaging almost 106!

In the final game of the night, five time world champion and 2012 grand slam champion Raymond van Barneveld made his first appearence in this tournament since 2018. He played Bullyboy Michael Smith in a very tasty game. It looked like Smith would take a 2-0 lead but then Barney hit a 122-finish on the bullseye to make it 1-1! Another finish on the bullseye, 86, as Van Barneveld went 2-1 up. At 2-2 he had 97 left but missed 2 darts at double 20 as Smith broke his throw and got 3-2 up… But 1 leg later a 62-finish saw Barney break straight back to 3-3. 2 more holds of throw made it 4-4, and RVB had the darts in the decider. Unfortunately he couldn’t win it though, Smith won 5-4. But only a leg difference of -1 so it’s not over yet!
